Do I need a plumber, or an electrician?
If your geyser is leaking water or the tank has burst, of course, you need a plumber. However, if your geyser is physically intact but the water is cold or tripping your electricity, call a licensed electrician. Most hot water failures are electrical (element or thermostat). Remember that plumbers are not licensed to perform electrical repairs or certify the safety of the wiring.

What’s the most likely cause of my hot water failure?
Statistically, 80% – 90% of hot water failures are caused by a burnt-out heating element or a faulty thermostat (or burned wiring). In Cape Town, limescale build-up on the element is the leading culprit, eventually causing it to crack or short-circuit. I carry replacements for both, to get your heat back on, in a single visit. A thermostat fail 🔗the geyser will heat up over it’s designed threshold, over-pressurise and ultimately burst.
Can I do this myself?
Rather not! Unless you understand how a geyser works, and what to look for, there’s a lot that can go wrong. To get to the element, you have to drain the geyser (note: it’s a high pressure vessel), then you need to check the vacuum-breakers, T&P valve, electrical & earthing compliance, etc. Seriously, call a professional.
Do you work on weekends?
I offer two Saturday slots for those unexpected Saturday morning emergencies – typically – –
- Slot 1: 09h00 – 11h00
- Slot 2: 12h00 – 14h00
What if the problem turns out to be a plumbing issue?
If I arrive and discover the fault is a plumbing issue rather than an electrical failure, I do not charge a call-out fee. I believe in fair business, so I will simply advise, issue a report, and advise on the best course of action – and recommend the type of plumbing specialist you need to contact. My goal is make sure your hot water is restored asap.
